adoption begins with loss: healing begins with understanding

At Harper-Chapel, we believe that adoptees deserve to live in communities where their unique experiences are seen and validated. Our mission is to help create a world where adoptees are met with understanding, and compassion, and can access resources that support their wellbeing. We believe that the education of communities is the best way to create trauma-informed, adoption-competent spaces that are more comfortable for adoptees to navigate.

The voices of adoptees inform our passion and our mission. With our combined experience in Education and Mental Health, our program development, and our consultative approach are designed to raise awareness about these complicated issues and provide the tools necessary to create a world that is more compassionate and equitable for adoptees of all ages.

why compassionate care is needed

Increased Risk

Adoptees are disproportionately represented within the mental health system and face a heightened risk of suicide, being four times more likely to attempt suicide than their non-adopted peers. This stark reality underscores the critical need for adoption-competent care that addresses the unique challenges and vulnerabilities faced by adoptees.

an ongoing trauma

Adoption is not an experience marked by a beginning and an end. It is a process that has lifelong implications for the adoptee, adoptive families, and first families. Furthermore, adoption is a developmental trauma. Throughout all stages of development in a lifespan, the adoptee perceives their adoption with new understanding. Adoptees’ experiences of loss, grief, and identity formation are processed over and over again. This ongoing process can present challenges for adoptees as they navigate relationships, sense of self, and belonging. Recognizing this lifelong impact is crucial in providing compassionate care.
